Plot

Then the beach trip that he was looking forward to is canceled because the Heffleys don't have enough money so that they resort to going to the town pool, which Greg dislikes because of its open showers showing large, hairy men.
Later Greg and Rowley have a sleepover and watch a horror movie taken from Rodrick's room. After the movie, Greg soon became paranoid on account of a muddy hand that might strangle them, since the hand came right toward the screen before the end.
They also hide in the shower all night and Greg's father finds them in the bathroom in the morning. Soon, Mom starts a reading club called "Reading is Fun" in which Greg is the only participant after two days, because she found out about Greg watching the horror movie.
The reading program, however, is put to a stop when Mr. Jefferson arrives with a huge bill that Greg and Rowley spent on fruit smoothies at the country club, and he forces Greg and Rowley to pay it off.
Greg and Rowley decide to do a lawn care service called the "V.I.P. lawn care service" to pay the debt. Their first customer is Mrs. Canfield, who lives on Greg's grandmother's street. Unfortunately, the job ended when the boys have never used a lawn mower before.
When Greg tells Rowley he has to do most of the work while Greg holds the money, that makes Rowley angry and he quits. Greg mows Mrs. Canfield's lawn by himself, but she refuses to pay him because he didn't mow all of her lawn.
Greg's birthday then comes,and his money is confiscated to pay Mr Jefferson.Greg also gets a "Ladybug" cellphone that's useless.Feeling bad about it, Mom takes the boys to the pet shop where Greg and Rodrick get fish but Greg's one gets eaten.
On Fathers day Dad gets a dog called Sweetie when he learns that his old dog Nutty died and his dad told him a different story.The dog causes a bit of trouble,especially with Greg.
Greg starts hanging out with Heather Hills (Who's Holly Hills' sister from The Last Straw)at the pool because he likes her but with her going to college he decides to stop.
Greg and his mom run into the Jeffersons in the supermarket and they said they were going to the beach and Greg comes with them. Greg is kicked out though because of hitting Rowley with a rubber band.

Rodrick tells Greg that Dad was so mad about the Rowley thing that he's going to sell him.The next day Greg becomes worried so he calls the police.But he realizes Dad was taking him to a baseball match.
